Looking at art

Looking at art is a skill that can be practised. Start with what you see, not with what you know.

Most museum visitors spend less than half a minute in front of a work. Give a picture a few minutes instead: let your eye wander, step close and step back, and notice what you notice.

Art historians often use a simple four-step method. It helps you distinguish between what is actually in the picture and what you read into it, and to build up an interpretation step by step.
