Postmodernism and the present
Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown turned against the purity of modernism. Postmodernism, with quotation and colour, spread through American cities in the 1980s.
Venturi’s house for his mother, the Vanna Venturi House of 1964, is one of the first works of postmodernism. Michael Graves’s Portland Building of 1982 and Philip Johnson’s AT&T Building in New York, with a broken pediment on top, made the style a corporate one.
Frank Gehry from Los Angeles took forms further with the help of the computer, and his Walt Disney Concert Hall opened in 2003.
