The Baroque

After the victory over the Ottomans at Vienna in 1683 emperors, nobles and monasteries built in a triumphant Baroque.

Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach designed the Karlskirche with two columns modelled on Trajan’s Column, and Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt the Belvedere for Prince Eugene. The abbey of Melk, built by Jakob Prandtauer, rises like a palace above the Danube.
