Vienna around 1900
For a few years around the turn of the century Vienna was the centre of a new architecture, from the golden dome of the Secession to the smooth façades of Adolf Loos.
Joseph Maria Olbrich’s Secession building of 1898 bears the motto “To every age its art, to art its freedom”. Otto Wagner’s Majolica House has a façade of flowering tiles, and his Postal Savings Bank shows its construction openly. Adolf Loos’s building on the Michaelerplatz, built in 1909–1911, caused a scandal with its plain upper storeys.
