Arts and Crafts and Glasgow

Around 1900 British houses were admired all over Europe. In Glasgow Charles Rennie Mackintosh created his own severe variant of Art Nouveau.

Mackintosh’s Glasgow School of Art, built in two phases in 1897–1909, and the Hill House in Helensburgh unite Scottish castles and Japanese simplicity. The school was badly damaged by fires in 2014 and 2018.

In 1898 Ebenezer Howard described the garden city, and Letchworth, begun in 1903, became the first.
