Roman Gaul

After Caesar’s conquest Gaul received Roman towns with temples, theatres, aqueducts and arches. Some of the best-preserved Roman buildings stand in southern France.

The Maison Carrée in Nîmes, built around the beginning of our era, is one of the best-preserved Roman temples in the world. The Pont du Gard carried water to Nîmes across the river Gardon on three tiers of arches, and the amphitheatres of Nîmes and Arles are still in use.

Much later the Maison Carrée became the model for Thomas Jefferson’s capitol in Virginia.
