Classicism in Berlin and Munich

Around 1800 Prussia and Bavaria sought a Greek gravity. Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Leo von Klenze gave Berlin and Munich their classical face.

The Brandenburg Gate, built in 1788–1791 by Carl Gotthard Langhans, takes the gateway of the Acropolis as its model. Schinkel’s Schauspielhaus and Altes Museum, with a long Ionic colonnade facing the Lustgarten, made Berlin an Athens on the Spree.

In Munich Leo von Klenze built the Glyptothek and the Propyläen for King Ludwig I.
