The North of Christian IV

Denmark was the strongest power in the North in the 16th century, and its kings built in a colourful Netherlandish Renaissance of red brick and pale sandstone.

Frederick II rebuilt the castle at Helsingør as Kronborg in the 1570s and 80s. Christian IV, king from 1588 to 1648, built Frederiksborg, Rosenborg and the Exchange in Copenhagen and founded new towns such as Kristianstad and Christiania, today’s Oslo.
