The Karl Johan era
Under Karl XIV Johan, Empire became a Swedish style: large, light and rather bare buildings, and state projects such as the Göta Canal and Karlsborg fortress.
Fredrik Blom designed Rosendal Palace on Djurgården for the king, built in 1823–1827, with its interiors preserved. Out in the country spacious churches were built for a growing population.
The ideal of the time was simplicity and order: smooth rendered façades, round-arched windows and heavy cornices.
