The record years
Sweden had escaped the war and built more per inhabitant than almost any other country: suburbs on the underground, new town centres and the homes of the Million Programme.
Vällingby, opened in 1954, became the model for a suburb with work, housing and a centre at the station. The Hötorget towers and Sergels torg replaced the old Klara district in the centre of Stockholm.
At the same time Sigurd Lewerentz and Peter Celsing built some of the most remarkable buildings of the post-war period: St Mark’s Church in Björkhagen, St Peter’s Church in Klippan and Kulturhuset on Sergels torg.
