Swedish Grace

In the 1910s and 20s Swedish architects simplified classicism into something light and almost dreamlike. The style has been given the name Swedish Grace.

In 1915 Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz won the competition for the Woodland Cemetery in Stockholm, where landscape and buildings form a whole. Asplund’s City Library, completed in 1928, is a cylinder on a cube, almost without ornament.

Ivar Tengbom’s Concert Hall at Hötorget, opened in 1926, has a façade of tall Corinthian columns, and his Match Palace became the headquarters of Ivar Kreuger. In Gothenburg Sigfrid Ericson and Arvid Bjerke designed the art museum on Götaplatsen for the jubilee exhibition of 1923.
