Swedish contemporary art
The return of painting, video, installation and new voices.
In the 1980s painting returned in a new, often playful and ironic form, and artists such as Ernst Billgren and Dan Wolgers challenged the rules of the art world.
Since the 1990s many artists have worked with video, installation and photography – Ann-Sofi Sidén, Annika von Hausswolff and Nathalie Djurberg, who won a Silver Lion in Venice. At the same time painting has enjoyed a new golden age with Karin Mamma Andersson and Cecilia Edefalk.
Swedish art history is also being rewritten. Hilma af Klint’s exhibition at the Guggenheim in New York in 2018 became the museum’s most visited ever, and overlooked artists such as Sigrid Hjertén and Vera Nilsson have received fresh attention.
