Giorgio Armani

Milan house known for the soft, unstructured jacket, which had its breakthrough in the film American Gigolo (1980).

Giorgio Armani worked as a window dresser and as a designer for Nino Cerruti before setting up on his own in Milan with Sergio Galeotti. He removed lining, padding and stiffness from the jacket and gave both menswear and womenswear a soft, relaxed silhouette.

In the 1980s Armani became the symbol of the new power dressing, with muted colours such as greige. The house built up several lines, from Giorgio Armani to Emporio Armani, and dressed many film stars.

Labels reading Giorgio Armani and, for other lines, Emporio Armani with the eagle.
