American Type Founders

A merger of American type foundries; Morris Fuller Benton designed typefaces such as Franklin Gothic and Century Schoolbook there.

American Type Founders was formed when a large number of American type foundries merged to withstand competition from typesetting machines. The company gained a near monopoly on foundry type in the United States.

Morris Fuller Benton led the design work and drew or revised hundreds of typefaces, among them Franklin Gothic, News Gothic and Century Schoolbook. ATF's specimen books were long a basic reference for American printers.
