H. Berthold

Type foundry in Berlin, known for Akzidenz-Grotesk (1898) and later for phototypesetting.

Hermann Berthold founded a company in Berlin making brass rules and developed a standardised typographic measure. The firm bought other type foundries and became one of the largest in Germany.

Akzidenz-Grotesk, a sans serif for advertising and jobbing work, became a model for Swiss typographers after the Second World War and for Helvetica. In the era of phototypesetting Günter Gerhard Lange led the foundry's design work.

Berthold’s name in specimens and on phototypesetting matrices.
