Cassina

Furniture firm in Meda near Milan. Since the 1960s it has made the furniture of Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand under licence, as well as pieces by Gio Ponti and Vico Magistretti.

The brothers Cesare and Umberto Cassina took over a family workshop in Meda in Brianza, where furniture-making had a long tradition. After the Second World War they made furniture for ships and hotels, often to Gio Ponti's designs.

Gio Ponti's light Superleggera chair of 1957 weighed under two kilos. From 1965 Cassina made the furniture of Le Corbusier, Jeanneret and Perriand, and the I Maestri series later took in Rietveld, Mackintosh and Frank Lloyd Wright.

Numbered metal plates or stamps with Cassina and the model designation, for instance LC for the Le Corbusier models.
