Citizen

Japanese maker known for large volumes and for Eco-Drive, light-powered watches, from the 1970s.

The company began as the Shokosha Watch Research Institute in Tokyo, and the name Citizen came from its first pocket watch in 1924, which, by tradition, was named by the mayor of Tokyo. Citizen became one of Japan's largest watchmakers.

Citizen was early in quartz and in 1976 launched the first analogue wristwatch powered by light. Under the name Eco-Drive from 1995, light-powered watches became the brand's hallmark.
