Coca-Cola
The soft drink from Atlanta whose script logo and contour bottle (1915) are among the world’s best-known designs.
The pharmacist John Pemberton mixed the drink in Atlanta, and his bookkeeper Frank Robinson gave it its name and script logo. Asa Candler bought the rights and made Coca-Cola a national brand through licensed bottling.
To distinguish the drink from imitations the company ordered a bottle that could be recognised in the dark and when broken. The contour bottle of 1915 became one of the best-known objects in the world, and its advertising shaped the image of the modern Santa Claus.
The script logo; year and place of manufacture in the bottle’s base.
