Deberny & Peignot

Paris type foundry that issued Cassandre’s Bifur and Peignot and Adrian Frutiger’s Univers (1957).

Deberny & Peignot was formed when two old Paris type foundries merged, and the company worked closely with artists in the Paris of Art Deco. Charles Peignot commissioned Cassandre to design typefaces.

Bifur of 1929 and Peignot of 1937 are among the most distinctive typefaces of the inter-war years. After the war the foundry had Adrian Frutiger draw Univers, a complete family in 21 weights numbered in a system.
