Emeco

American maker of aluminium chairs, known for the 1006 Navy chair of 1944.

Wilton C. Dinges founded the Electrical Machine & Equipment Company in Hanover, Pennsylvania, and was commissioned by the US Navy to make a chair that could withstand sea air, fire and knocks. The 1006 chair was made from recycled aluminium in many steps by hand.

The Navy chair was used on ships, submarines and in public buildings. From the 1990s Emeco worked with designers such as Philippe Starck and Norman Foster, and the Navy 111 chair of 2010 is made from recycled plastic bottles.

Welded and anodised aluminium without visible joints.

Emeco embossed under the seat.
