Emigre
Zuzana Ličko and Rudy VanderLans’s magazine and type foundry in California, with experimental digital typefaces.
Rudy VanderLans and Zuzana Ličko started the magazine Emigre in Berkeley in 1984. When the Macintosh arrived, Ličko began designing typefaces directly on screen, adapted to its coarse resolution.
In the 1980s and 1990s Emigre became a meeting place for experimental graphic design. The typefaces Template Gothic and Mrs Eaves show the range: one based on lettering templates, the other an interpretation of Baskerville.
Emigre in the font’s name; early typefaces built for low resolution.
