Farina gegenüber

Johann Maria Farina’s firm in Cologne, the oldest perfume factory in the world still in existence.

Johann Maria Farina came from Italy and started his fragrance business in Cologne, opposite a square that gave it the name gegenüber, opposite. His light scent was named Eau de Cologne after the city.

The scent became popular at the courts of Europe, and the name Eau de Cologne became a word of its own. The company is reckoned the oldest perfume maker still in business and is still owned by the family.
