Frédéric Malle was the grandson of Serge Heftler-Louiche, who founded Parfums Christian Dior. He started Éditions de Parfums to give perfumers a free hand.

The perfumer's name is printed on the bottle, like an author's on a book. The brand has been part of Estée Lauder since 2015.
