Manufacture des Gobelins

Louis XIV’s state workshop for tapestries and furniture in Paris. The word Gobelin for tapestry comes from here.

The Gobelin family were dyers in Paris with their workshop on the river Bièvre. Louis XIV's minister Colbert gathered the king's weavers, cabinetmakers and goldsmiths there in a state manufactory.

Charles Le Brun led the enterprise and had tapestries woven with the king's history. The manufactory has woven for the French state ever since, today to designs by modern and contemporary artists.

Woven signatures and the workshop’s name in the border of later tapestries.
