Handarbetets Vänner

Society in Stockholm founded to preserve and renew Swedish textile art; it has woven hangings and rugs after artists’ designs.

Sophie Adlersparre and others founded the association to preserve and renew Swedish textile art when industry threatened home crafts. The association had workshops for weaving and embroidery and a school.

Artists such as Gerda Tirén, Märta Måås-Fjetterström and later many modern artists made designs for hangings and rugs. The association still weaves in Stockholm and takes commissions from churches and public buildings.

Woven HV or the society’s mark, often with a year.
