Harry Winston
New York jeweller, known for large diamonds and for having given the Hope diamond to the Smithsonian.
Harry Winston was the son of a jeweller and set up on his own in New York. He bought large old jewels and recut the stones in a modern style, and he owned some of the world's most famous diamonds.
In 1958 he gave the Hope diamond to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. The firm was early in lending diamonds to film stars for the Oscars and is now part of the Swatch Group.
