The company began as the Star Furniture Company in Zeeland, Michigan, making traditional furniture. D. J. De Pree renamed it after his father-in-law Herman Miller and turned it towards modern design when Gilbert Rohde persuaded him in the 1930s.

George Nelson led design from 1945, and Charles and Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi and Alexander Girard designed for the company. The Action Office system and the Aeron chair of 1994 changed the office. Herman Miller merged with Knoll in 2021.
