Herreshoff Manufacturing Company

The brothers John B. and Nathanael Herreshoff’s yard in Bristol, Rhode Island; built America’s Cup defenders, torpedo boats and small keelboats.

The brothers Nathanael Greene and John Brown Herreshoff founded the yard in Bristol, Rhode Island. Nathanael was the designer and John, who was blind, ran the business.

The yard built several America’s Cup defenders, among them Reliance of 1903, and small boats such as the Herreshoff 12½. It closed in 1945, and there is a museum in Bristol.

Hull numbers in the Herreshoff register, which survives and dates every boat.
