IBM
Office machines and computers; the Selectric typewriter (1961) and the IBM PC (1981). Eliot Noyes and Paul Rand gave the company a coherent design.
IBM was formed by the merger of companies making punched-card machines, scales and time clocks, and Thomas J. Watson made it a world leader in office machines and computers.
In the 1950s Thomas J. Watson Jr. hired Eliot Noyes, who together with Paul Rand, Charles Eames and architects gave IBM a coherent design programme. The Selectric typewriter with its type ball and the ThinkPad 700C laptop of 1992 are well-known examples.
