IKEA
Founded by Ingvar Kamprad in Småland. Began selling flat-packed furniture in the 1950s and has made Scandinavian design an everyday product all over the world. Products have names and often a printed production date on the label.
Ingvar Kamprad began as a seller of small goods in Agunnaryd, and the name IKEA was formed from his initials and the farm Elmtaryd and the parish of Agunnaryd. The first furniture showroom opened in Älmhult in 1953 and the store in 1958.
Flat packs and self-service made the furniture cheap. The Poäng armchair of 1976 and the Billy bookcase of 1979 are among the best-selling pieces of furniture in the world, and IKEA has had designers such as Gillis Lundgren and Erik Wørts.
Product name, article number and often the production date on a label or moulded into the plastic.
