Indian

American make from Springfield, Massachusetts; Harley-Davidson’s great rival with models such as the Scout and Chief.

George Hendee and Oscar Hedström founded Hendee Manufacturing in Springfield, Massachusetts, and built motorcycles under the name Indian. The company was long America's largest motorcycle maker.

The Scout of 1920 and the Chief of 1922 became classics. Production ended in 1953, and the marque has since been revived.

The Indian head and the name in script; the large, rounded mudguards on the Chief.
