John Smedley

English knitwear mill in Derbyshire, known for fine sweaters in merino wool and Sea Island cotton.

The Lea Mills factory in Derbyshire started in the 18th century and has been run by the Smedley family ever since. It is reckoned one of the oldest factories in the world still in operation.

John Smedley became known for finely knitted sweaters and polo shirts in a very fine gauge, worn by everyone from officers to musicians. The garments are still knitted and sewn at Lea Mills.

Fine knitting, often 30 gauge, in merino wool or cotton.
