Longines
Watch factory in Saint-Imier, known for pocket watches, aviation watches and sports timing. Its winged hourglass, registered in 1889, is counted among the oldest registered trademarks still in use.
Auguste Agassiz started a watch firm in Saint-Imier, and his nephew Ernest Francillon built a factory by a meadow called Les Longines. The factory brought the whole production under one roof, which was unusual in the Jura mountains.
Longines made chronographs and timers early on and was official timekeeper at many sporting events. After his flight across the Atlantic, Charles Lindbergh designed a navigation watch that Longines made in 1931. The brand is part of the Swatch Group.
The serial number on the movement can be dated from the firm’s registers; the winged hourglass on the movement.
