Melitta

Melitta Bentz’s company, founded in Dresden and later moved to Minden; coffee filters, filter holders and coffee makers.

Melitta Bentz was a housewife in Dresden who made a filter from blotting paper in a brass pot with holes, to keep the grounds out of the coffee. She received a patent in 1908 and started the company with her husband.

Her sons developed the filter in porcelain and then in plastic, and the conical filter holder of the 1930s became the standard. The company moved to Minden and has become a large group.

The Melitta name and filter size (for example 1x2, 1x4) on holders and packaging.
