Manufacture Oberkampf
Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf’s print works at Jouy-en-Josas, which gave its name to toile de Jouy.
Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf was a German textile printer who started the factory at Jouy-en-Josas near Versailles. He printed cotton fabrics with copper plates, which gave fine, detailed pictures in one colour.
The patterns showed landscapes, historical events and everyday life, and they became known as toile de Jouy. The factory was one of the largest in France in the 18th century and closed in 1843.
Original prints sometimes have the factory’s stamp in the selvedge; most toiles today are later reprints.
