Piaggio

Founded in Genoa as a supplier to ships and railways, later aircraft; after the war the Vespa scooter (1946) and the three-wheeled Ape.

Rinaldo Piaggio started in Genoa with fittings for ships and then railway carriages and aircraft. The factory in Pontedera was bombed during the war, and Enrico Piaggio wanted to make something new of it.

Corradino D'Ascanio, an aircraft engineer, designed the Vespa with a monocoque body and the engine behind a cowling. The Ape three-wheeler of 1948 was based on the same idea and became a utility vehicle for small businesses.

Frame number stamped on the frame and the Vespa script on the leg shield.
