Riedel

Austrian glassmaking family in its eleventh generation, known for wine glasses shaped for the grape variety.

The Riedel family had been glassmakers in Bohemia since the 18th century and after the Second World War moved to Kufstein in Tyrol. There Claus Josef Riedel developed thin, simple wine glasses without decoration.

The Sommeliers series of 1973 had different glasses for different grape varieties, and the idea that the shape of the glass affects the taste of the wine spread around the world. Riedel also owns Spiegelau and Nachtmann.

Thin, undecorated bowls of large volume and Riedel etched in the foot.

Glasses named after the grape variety rather than the size.
