Mike Sinyard started Specialized in California and first imported bicycle components from Italy. The company then began making its own tyres and bicycles.

The Stumpjumper of 1981 was the first mountain bike made in large series. Specialized is based in Morgan Hill, California.

The name on the down tube and S-Works on the most expensive models.
