Steuben

Glassworks in Corning, New York, which first made coloured art glass under Frederick Carder and from the 1930s thick, clear engraved crystal.

Frederick Carder came from England and founded the Steuben Glass Works in Corning with Thomas Hawkes. Carder made coloured art glass such as Aurene, with an iridescent surface.

Corning Glass Works took over, and from 1933 Steuben made only clear crystal, often engraved after artists' designs. The pieces were given as state gifts by the American president.

Engraved signature Steuben under the foot; older coloured glass sometimes with a fleur-de-lis.
