String Furniture

Swedish maker of the String shelving system, designed in 1949 by Nisse and Kajsa Strinning.

The architect Nisse Strinning and his wife Kajsa designed a shelving system with wall panels of plastic-coated wire and wooden shelves that could be moved freely. It won a competition organised by Bonniers in 1949.

String became a symbol of the Swedish 1950s home and has been made ever since. The company String Furniture is based in Malmö.

Ladder-like side panels of thin wire and wooden shelves with rounded edges.

A label or stamp with String on the side panels.
