Thermos

German maker of vacuum flasks whose name became a word of its own in many languages.

Thermos GmbH was founded in Berlin to make vacuum flasks after James Dewar's invention for laboratories. The name comes from the Greek word for hot.

The flasks were soon made in several countries, and the name became so common that it became a word for all vacuum flasks. The brand survives and is now owned by a Japanese company.

Flasks with a glass liner and an outer casing of metal or plastic.
