Carl Zeiss

Carl Zeiss’s optical works in Jena; glass and instruments of the highest quality, and spectacle lenses since the early 20th century.

Carl Zeiss opened a workshop for microscopes in Jena, and the physicist Ernst Abbe worked out the optical principles. Abbe founded the Carl Zeiss Foundation, which still owns the company.

Zeiss made lenses such as the Tessar and cameras under the Zeiss Ikon name, such as the Contax. After the Second World War the company was divided into an East German one in Jena and a West German one in Oberkochen, which merged after reunification.
