Eric Gill

Sculptor and typographer

English sculptor, letter-cutter and typographer who designed Gill Sans and Perpetua for Monotype.

Eric Gill learned lettering from Edward Johnston and worked as a letter-cutter and sculptor. For Monotype he designed Gill Sans (1928) and Perpetua among others.

Gill Sans became one of Britain’s most widely used typefaces. Since his death his diaries have shown that he sexually abused his daughters, which has made his legacy contested.
