Federal style and the Shakers

The young republic chose antique forms, and the Shaker movement made simplicity a matter of faith.

The Federal style followed Hepplewhite and Sheraton, with straight, light furniture and eagles as a national symbol. Duncan Phyfe in New York became the best-known cabinetmaker.

The Shakers, a religious community that had come from England in 1774, lived in collective villages and made furniture, boxes and tools without decoration. Their chairs and cupboards later became models for modern design, among others for Danish designers.
