Colonial cabinetmakers and silversmiths
Cabinetmakers in Boston, Newport and Philadelphia interpreted English models with features of their own.
In the British colonies furniture was made after English pattern books, but with local woods and solutions of its own. The Townsend and Goddard families in Newport made block-front desks, and Philadelphia became known for Chippendale furniture. Windsor chairs were made in large numbers.
The silversmith Paul Revere in Boston made jugs and bowls, among them the Sons of Liberty Bowl of 1768. He is best known for his ride of 1775 before the War of Independence.
