Arts and Crafts and Glasgow

Guilds, hand printing and Liberty – and in Glasgow an austere new style that became important in Vienna.

The movement organised itself in guilds and exhibition societies. C. R. Ashbee's Guild of Handicraft, Morris's Kelmscott Press and Liberty & Co. in London shaped a British style of hammered silver, hand-printed fabrics and simple oak furniture.

In Glasgow Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald worked with tall, narrow furniture and stylised roses. Mackintosh designed the Glasgow School of Art and several tea rooms for Kate Cranston.
