Art Deco and the modern movement
Paris 1925, Ruhlmann's luxury, Chanel's simplicity, the tubular steel of Le Corbusier and Perriand.
The 1925 exhibition gave Art Deco its name. Ruhlmann, Puiforcat and Lalique made luxury objects, Cassandre posters and Sonia Delaunay fabrics. Chanel's little black dress of 1926 made simplicity elegant.
At the same time Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand developed tubular steel furniture, such as the chaise longue of 1928. Eileen Gray built the villa E-1027. The Union des artistes modernes was formed in 1929 as a counterweight to the decorative style.
