New Look and the Citroën DS
Fashion, cars and furniture from a country rebuilding itself and looking towards space.
Christian Dior's New Look of 1947 made Paris the capital of fashion again. The Citroën DS of 1955, designed by Flaminio Bertoni, and the Bic Cristal of 1950 showed French industrial design. Jean Prouvé made furniture and houses of folded sheet steel.
In the 1960s Pierre Paulin and Olivier Mourgue made low, stretch-covered furniture, and the couturiers Courrèges and Cardin designed the clothes of the space age.
