The Bauhaus and the Weimar Republic
The Bauhaus, the New Frankfurt and the new typography – and then Nazism's end to the modern movement in Germany.
The Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau made Germany the centre of modernism. Tubular steel furniture, lamps and typefaces by Breuer, Brandt, Wagenfeld and Renner came out of the same milieu. Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky's Frankfurt kitchen was built into thousands of flats.
After 1933 the Bauhaus closed and many designers emigrated. Josef Frank moved to Sweden, Gropius and Breuer to the United States. Under Nazism industrial products such as the Volksempfänger radio and Porsche's Volkswagen were also made.
