Biedermeier
The middle-class home: simple, well-made furniture in light wood, and Thonet's first bent chairs.
After the Napoleonic Wars the middle classes of Vienna, Berlin and Munich withdrew into the home. Furniture was made in cherry, pear and birch, with smooth surfaces. Josef Danhauser's factory in Vienna made furniture in series.
Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed furniture in Berlin, and Michael Thonet began experimenting with glued and bent wood in Boppard before moving to Vienna in 1842.
